Canvas clips, also known as offsets, are L-shaped metal hardware that secure canvas art into frames with a shallower depth. One leg fastens onto the back of the frame while a second leg holds the canvas stretcher in place. Canvas offset clips are thus a quick, no-fuss solution for repurposing frames for canvas art. They come in three sizes to accommodate the difference between the canvas stretcher and the frame rabbet as they fasten the wooden canvas stretcher bars into the frame.
Canvas clips for securing wooden canvas stretchers and heavier and thicker wood frames
Measures ¼”
Includes #6 x ⅜ screws (1 per clip)
Place the canvas into the loading frame and measure the rise of the frame or canvas, depending on which one is deeper (i.e. measure how much of which is projecting past the other). Determine what size of clip to use based on this.
For small and medium frames, position one clip on each side of the frame. For bigger frames, space the clips out at 4-5” intervals. Note: If the frame is deeper than the canvas, it’s best to use a double-hole canvas clip. If you want to use the single-hole variety, you’ll need to attach the offset to the stretcher instead of the frame.
Fasten the clips using an awl or a screwdriver.
